A note about Math Facts:
Basic math skills are a necessary component for our Standard based curriculum. Therefore, upon entering 5th grade, students need to be expertly skilled in their basic multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts. Students need to be able to solve a series of 50, simple, math problems within 1- 2 minutes. For example: 5x6=30; 9x8=72; 12x11= 121.
Students will be responsible for multiplication facts from 0x0 – 12x12.
2019 Fifth Grade Summer Reading
Prevent the Summer Slide
As parents and educators we need to ensure that our children do not fall into what is commonly referred to as the “summer slide”. It sounds like fun, but it can make the transition from one grade to the next a difficult one. Research shows that students who do not read during the summer may experience a decrease in their reading level. Those who read regularly over the summer break often improve their reading level and ability. We want our students at St. Columba to start strong in the fall by participating in our summer reading program.
All students in the 5th grade will be expected to:
· read a minimum of 3 books, (ones that they have not previously read)
· keep a reading log
· complete a project based on one of their reading selections
These projects were designed to promote creativity, engagement, and fun with reading. Students will have the choice of selecting from a variety of projects which they will complete and turn in the first week of school. This will be a graded project.

Thank you for your support. Remember to be a model: Read, read, read in front of your child and read together with your child.
Have a safe and relaxing summer, I look forward to seeing you and your student on August 27th.
