Dear Future Fourth Grade Parents and Students,
Summer is almost here, and soon we will be enjoying hot summer days at the beach, visiting friends and family, and having barbeques, and relaxing. Summer is also an opportunity to learn and grow, so it is important that we encourage our children to read every day and not lose out on that opportunity.
Reading is an essential part of the learning process and in fourth grade: we read a lot. I believe that children who read more do better on standardized tests and go further in pursuing their education. Therefore, I am asking you to continue to instill that love of learning in your child this summer by reading together, sharing books that you enjoyed reading at their age, and talking to your child about what they are reading.
This year students will read the book Holes by Louis Sachar. There is a special reading log (click on "reading log") that requires the students to record their weekly reading time once a week and to answer some questions about what they read. Also there is a suggested summer reading list (click on "summer reading list") that a previous fourth grade class compiled of their favorite books plus a few more that I have added. This list is just to be used as a guide. It is important that your child reads books that he/she enjoys as well. I would like each student to read at least 20 minutes a day and complete 3-5 books in addition to Holes this summer.
In order to prepare you for fourth grade math, I have a list of skills for you to do in order to review over the summer. Reviewing these skills will help prepare you for math in the fall.
There are two parts to the review:
1. The work included in your report card envelope
2. The IXL work detailed below
For the math pages in the envelope: Please show your work in order to ensure proper credit. If you need another copy of the math pages, please contact the school office.
For IXL: You will need to log onto IXL.com/signin/saintcolumba using your username (first initial with last name) and password (math). If this doesn’t work, you can contact Mrs. Pointer at: [email protected]. To ensure proper credit, please follow this procedure to log in.
You will have unlimited access to IXL.com. You can do the practice reviews as often as you like, trying to improve your score and achieve mastery. The highest score on each skill will be the grade recorded. You can do additional skills on the fourth grade level for extra credit. You will also be tested on these skills in September during computer class. The two scores will be added together for a compiled grade. This grade will be part of your math grade for the first quarter. I am also including the third grade end of the year assessment that will be collected on the first day of school. This will be graded and also used as part of your math grade for the first quarter.
These are the skills I would like to work on:
3rd grade math:
B.3 Place Value names up to hundred thousands
B.4 Value of a digit
C.1 Add two numbers up to three digits
D.1 Subtract two numbers up to three digits
G.15 Multiplication tables up to 12
K.13 Division facts up to 12
M.8 Addition and subtraction word problems
W.3 Understand fractions: area models
I hope you have a healthy and relaxing summer with your child.
